J. Grant Brittain is one of the most widely recognized and influential skateboard photographers on the planet. He landed a job at the Del Mar Skate Ranch in 1978 which was at the epicenter of the California skateboarding scene. Within a few years, Brittain was submitting photographs to Transworld Skateboarding magazine, going on to become the photo editor shortly thereafter. In 1987, “The Push,” a photo of Tod Swank made the cover of Transworld, becoming one of the most recognizable skateboarding photos. J. Grant Brittain, who captured photos of 11-year-old Tony Hawk, was instrumental in documenting the formative years of the legendary skateboarder’s career and has continued a lifelong friendship. This iconic photographer has mentored dozens of budding photographers and is revered by skateboarders around the world. This will be the acclaimed photographer’s very first museum exhibition retrospective, and a chance to see this collection of works from the 1980s which has inspired so many generations and still resonates today.
